Readers should take note of the estate's second wine, the delicious, up-front, Cheval-like Le Petit Cheval. The 2005 may be the finest example of this cuvee yet produced. Lastly, readers should be aware that the owners of Cheval Blanc recently purchased the nearby La Tour du Pin Figeac, so they now have another 20-acre vineyard which they hope to bring up to an exciting level of quality.

(55% merlot and 45% cabernet franc) Good deep red-ruby color. Currant, smoke and chocolate on the nose, with hints of shoe polish and licorice. Juicy and lively in the mouth, with firm acidity and a solid tannic spine. A bit youthfully austere today, but finishes with noteworthy persistence. Very promising for this second wine.

Has a gorgeous nose of blackberry, sweet tobacco and green olive. Medium- to full-bodied, with seamless tannins and a long, pretty finish. Needs a little more concentration to be outstanding. Already very enjoyable. The second wine of Cheval-Blanc.

Consumed @ THE VOL 94 in Pasadena. Strong initial flavor, but lacking something in the middle. Tastes the same caliber as cheaper $30 Bordeaux wines. Will never buy Petit Cheval again considering its inflated price. Actually, I will never buy a 2nd wine again.

About This Producer

Chateau Cheval Blanc, a 1er Grand Cru Classe (A), is the most renowned and sought-after producer in the St. Emilion appellation of Bordeaux. The estate's 37 hectares yield primarily Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with small percentages of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard soils consist of sand, clay and gravel; the clay soil lending opulence and the gravel more tannin structure to the wine. Cheval Blanc is characterized by aromatic complexity such as Asian spice and finesse that lasts through the finish. This Cabernet Franc-based blend has the staying power to age at least 10 to 50 years for the best vintages.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
