Professional Reviews For This Wine

Vinfolio | Rating: 97

Several years ago Chappellet introduced a bottling of their best lots in what has become a wine of legendary following. Referred to PHEV in the shorthand of the winery, a companion Cabernet Franc-based wine is also produced under the same program, and the wines represent the most severe cuts to include only the best barrels from the best lots. Vinfolio receives only a small allocation of this world-class wine. Blended with 18% Petite Verdot and 6% Malbec. The nose shows exquisite concentration to the profound cassis, chocolate, licorice and black cherry aromas, with a polished vein of spicy oak. Nothing is lost in the translation to the palate as the wine is seamlessly integrated across all facets. Flavors of blackberry, licorice, allspice, and mocha are well integrated into a marvelous complexity.

Another great 2005, this time from Chappellet, their 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is a gorgeous blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Petit Verdot (that's a lot) and 6% Malbec. It tips the scales at 14.5% alcohol, which is lofty in a cool year such as 2005. Chappellet was way ahead of its time developing vineyards on Pritchard Hill, which is now one of the most expensive and desirable addresses for Napa Valley viticulture. It is easy to see why. This wine has a dense black/purple color, a beautiful nose of spring flowers, creme de cassis and blackberry, full-bodied texture, and stunning purity, richness and length. This is classic and still very youthful and exuberant at age ten. Look for it to evolve for another 20-25 years.

Big, ripe and complex, but light on its feet. An elegant, spicy mix of rich currant, anise, toasty oak, espresso bean and subtle herbal scents, all of which fold together nicely, ending with a long, persistent finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Malbec.

About This Producer

Founded in 1967, Chappellet is one of the most established family-owned wineries in California. The portfolio of wines is still remarkably focused on what got them where they are today. Estate-grown Chardonnay and Cabernet are still the benchmarks here. Sited on the slopes of Pritchard Hill overlooking Lake Hennessey on the eastern side of Rutherford, neighbors include renowned producers Colgin, David Arthur, Girard, Long and Ovid.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
