The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon struts its stuff in an elegant but powerful style, with notes of black fruits, burning embers, roasted meats, and a hint of subtle bay leaf. The wine has terrific fruit concentration, full-bodied power, substantial but ripe tannins, and a long, long finish. This wine should drink nicely for at least two decades.

($135) Saturated deep ruby. Deep, enticing aromas of black fruits, bitter chocolate and black cardamom. Lush and creamy-sweet, but with ripe, integrated acidity giving shape to the highly concentrated flavors of blueberry, blackberry and dark chocolate. This outsized, dramatic cabernet is fat with fruit, but its seamless, velvety texture and sappy quality make it extremely easy to drink. Finishes lush and strong, with sweet tannins and palate-coating fruit.

Now in its fourth vintage, Buccella has become renowned for Mark Herold's deeply extracted style, which in 2005 shows no sign of letting up in the intensity department. A mantle of saturated, dense velvet-like purple-black in the glass, the nose gives up blue plum, boysenberry and almost gooey Moroccan dates. A somewhat firm palate on entry morphs into a hedonistic ripe profile of polished black fruits, cocoa and espresso with toasted nut on the finish. Plenty of voluptuous new oak should meld nicely over the next 24 months.

Very big fruit. Decanted for 3 hours and still had a wonderful ripe nose. Well balanced will drink we'll for many more years!

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
