Bright ruby. Aromas of cassis, black raspberry and liquid graphite. Hugely concentrated but very backward, with exotic and extremely dark flavors of black fruits, licorice and violet. This has a surprisingly silky texture (a year ago it seemed to be a bit more chunky) but the major tannins are going to require considerable patience. Better than I thought last year, but not for the faint of heart.

About This Producer


Acquired in 2001 by Parisian supermarket-tycoon-turned-controversial-Bordeaux-garagiste Gerard Perse, Chateaux Bellevue-Mondotte is nestled high on the pure limestone plateau above Pavie and Pavie-Decesse in St. Emilion. Along with its aforementioned neighbors, Bellevue-Mondotte joins Monbousquet on highlight reel of Perse's Right Bank empire. The second part of Bellevue-Mondotte's name pays homage to its other famous neighbors, La Mondotte and Chateau Troplong-Mondot, and the exceptional terroir on which it sits.

Robert Parker has referred to Bellevue-Mondotte as the "quintessential garage wine." The miniscule 2.5 hectare vineyard produces some of the smallest yields in all of Bordeaux. The blend is usually dominated by Merlot, with hints of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, and delivers serious modern Bordeaux with spectacular levels of intensity and concentration, lavish aromatics and an expansive, unctuous palate.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend


Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
