($70; 15.6% alcohol; 70% new oak) Pale green-tinged color. Aromas and flavors of dried pineapple, grapefruit, nutmeg and minerals. Hugely rich and dense, with a compellingly pliant, silky texture and great fullness and volume. As rich and chewy as this is, there is no sign of phenolic character on the back end. Subtle vanilla and smoke notes from the oak add complexity.

There are 350 cases of the 2005 Chardonnay Reuling Vineyard, which comes from the Goldridge soils of this Sonoma Coast site. This Chardonnay comes from a clone suitcased over from the Montrachet vineyard in Burgundy. There is no doubting the liquid minerality, striking honeyed citrus, white currant, hazelnut, and brioche notes are more French than California, but the power and richness are pure New World. An absolutely remarkable Chardonnay that is certainly one of the top half dozen or so Chardonnays I have ever tasted from California, this is a stunningly proportioned, profound wine that should drink beautifully for 5-7 years, if you can resist it that long.

Very ripe and opulent, showing sweet pear, fig and apple fruit, with hints of spice and melon. Keeps a focus on the ripe fruit, ending with a persistent aftertaste. 360 cases made.

Bright pear fruit on the nose and palate. Long finish. This is well balanced after 1/2 hour of air. Fabulous.

Stunning wine. Apricot, honey, coconut, green apple, pencil shaving... I could go on about this endlessly complex bouquet. Striking acid and chablis like minerality mark a glorious battering ram of a finish that goes on and on.

nearly perfect chardonnay; rich, buttery, but not "fat".

Very nice surprise. Tastes like a 2003 white burgundy, in fact tried this against an 03 Sauzet Puligny Perrieres.

About This Producer

Mark Aubert's four Sonoma Coast vineyard-designate Chardonnays - Lauren, Reuling, Quarry and Ritchie - have risen to cult status at a dizzying speed. Production is a limited 4,000 cases and the wines are available via the winery's mailing list. Aubert's career in winemaking reads like a fantasy, with his 1989 start as assistant winemaker at Peter Michael under the tutelage of Helen Turley, to his time at Colgin and Bryant Family. His eponymous wines are exemplary renditions of Chardonnay, replete with the rich bounty of the terroirs from which he sources the fruit. At the same time, they reflect his adept oenological hand, and maintain a focused balance of flavor and purity.

Aubert also makes several Pinot Noirs sourced from the Sonoma Coast as well as a "right-bank" Bordeaux style blend from Napa's Howell Mountain.
