The outstanding 2005 Grenache (a whopping 260 six-bottle cases produced) includes about 15% Syrah in the blend. More structured, restrained, and backward than either the 2004 or 2006, the 2005 possesses plenty of tannin along with enormous quantities of black cherry and blackberry fruit, medium to full body, good acidity, and a long, fresh finish. I am not a great believer in aging California Grenache for more than 10-12 years, but this cuvee may run the path effectively. In fact, it probably needs several years of bottle age in order to resolve some of its tannin.

($74) Inky purple. Explosively perfumed nose displays an exotic array of red and dark berry preserves, candied flowers and incense. Deep and chewy, with concentrated blackberry and licorice flavors. Supple tannins provide a gentle framework but this is dominated by its remarkable depth of sweet fruit today. Alban aged this in 75% new French oak, but I don't find a trace of it. When I mentioned that I have found recent vintages of this wine to have an almost syrah-like character, Alban responded that "since 2000, there's no question that the grenache here has become more powerful, probably due to the increased maturity of the vines."

Smoke, tar, wild berry and dried currant provide a dense, meaty core of flavor, with some hefty tannins. This clearly requires time and patience. 300 cases made.

Site Blog: Unidentified Appellation Black as night, perhaps because the Syrah portion of the blend lets its hues do the talking, bringing a saturated dimension that I almost never seen in Grenache dominated wines. I can'thelp but be reminded by a Christophe Baron Syrah as I stick my nose into this concentrated, seething monster of a red. Explosive arrays of charred lard, pepper, grilled herbs, violet, blackberry liqueur, melted licorice and road tar detonate in this haunting, almost freakish concoction. Much like a stocky physique in 'big and tall man? attire, this is yet another Alban that holds its lofty alcohol admirably. For fans of powerful, authoritative and flawlessly textured Rhone Rangers, this is a rare gem (thanks to some astronomically low yields) that you can'tafford to miss.

About This Producer

Alban Vineyards is a California wine estate producing various Rhone style blends and varietal wine. The winery is located in Edna Valley, near Arroyo Grande in the southern corner of San Luis Obispo County.

Starting in 1985, John Alban planted grapes for other people until he bought an estate in 1989. With a focus on creating wines made from Rhone Valley varieties, Alban became one of the pioneers in the Rhone Rangers movement, and is considered one of the most influential American Rhone producers.

Within a 250-acre (100 ha) area, the vineyard area extends 60 acres (24 ha), and is planted with varieties Syrah, Viognier and Roussanne. Grenache and Roussanne are also sourced from vineyards located in the warmer Paso Robles AVA.

Among the vineyard designate wines produced are the Lorraine Vineyard, Reva Vineyard Syrah and Seymour's Vineyard Syrah. Alban also produces Pandora, a blend of Grenache and Syrah, and a botrytized dessert wine.

Wine Varietal: Grenache

One of the most widely planted varieties in the world, Grenache is most well known as the base variety in wines from the Southern Rhone, such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Cotes-du-Rhone, and Gigondas. Grenache thrives in hot, arid climates all over the world particularly in the Mediterranean and Australia. Its origin is believed to be the Roussillon region of southern France (formerly Spain - where it is grown today and is known as Garnacha). Grenache is used in blends to round out Rhone-style reds to soften harsher varieties such as Syrah and Carignan. It is also used for rose wines. Typical descriptors for Grenache include raspberries, strawberries. black currants, black cherries, black olives, coffee, gingerbread, honey, leather, black pepper, tar, and herbes de Provence.
