Professional Reviews For This Wine

Vinfolio | Rating: 95

This old vine Sonoma Valley source, planted in the late 1800's comprises an exotic field blend of Zinfandel, Mataro, Carignane, Alicante and Petite Sirah. Shows a very polished nose of black fruits and cocoa. The palate is smooth pure blackberry and raspberry with vibrant sweet notes on the finish. Kudos to winemaker, Jeff Gaffner for making a Zinfandel that is only 14.5% alcohol. The vineyard barely yields a half ton per vine in a typical vintage, which leads to the intense character of the wine.

About This Producer

Founded in 1997 by winemaker Jeff Gaffner, the winery's cornerstone is its 100-year-old Casa Santinamaria Vineyard in Sonoma, a "field blend" vineyard that, at a half ton an acre, defines "low-yielding." Old vine Zinfandel (with its field-mates Petite Sirah, Carignane, Alicante Bouschet and Mataro) and Semillon come from this historic parcel. Pinot Noir and Syrah are sourced from small vineyards throughout Sonoma County. Total production is fewer than 2,000 cases, allowing Jeff to fulfill his mantra: "Winemaking must consume you, or your wines may not be worth consuming."

Wine Varietal: Zinfandel

Zinfandel is a black grape variety of Croatian descent. With no ties to France, Zinfandel has actually been linked to the Primitivo grape of Italy, but California is where the majority of Zinfandel is grown. This variety possesses extremely versatile characteristics from light and fruity, to jammy and ripe with high alcohol. Growing Zinfandel can be difficult due to its packed clusters and short stems, which make the vines prone to uneven ripening and mildew. Preferring a warm climate, Zinfandel is also grown in other western states in the United States as well as in Australia and South Africa. Typical descriptors for Zinfandel include red berry fruits, raspberry, blackberry, anise and pepper.
