Composed of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec, the saturated purple-colored 2004 Proprietary Red Wine is a wonderful monster in the making. It boasts a dense purple color as well as notes of beef blood, creme de cassis, licorice, incense and spring flowers. It looks more like a 2-year-old wine than one that has seen its tenth birthday. Mouth-coating, unctuously textured, corpulent but well-delineated, this is a spectacular Proprietary Red that is even greater than I remember it in its youth. Bravo to Jayson Pahlmeyer (I believe his winemaker at the time was Erin Green) for this dynamic duo of 2004s.

Well-focused on a rich, vibrant core of ripe blackberry and wild berry fruit. This is elegant, balanced and deep, yet well-structured, ending with a long, complex finish that's trim and tight. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. 5,840 cases made.

(a five-variety Bordeaux blend based on 79% cabernet sauvignon) Bright medium ruby. Black fruits, violet, graphite and wild spices on the nose. Sweet and lush, with concentrated flavors of crushed dark berries and spices; a whiff of menthol adds freshness. The long finish features sweet, broad, tongue-coating tannins and a suggestion of sour candy. This was a bit awkward from barrel a year ago but has turned out very well.

Soft and understated. Very Bordeaux-like. Wonder mouth fell and long finish.

Ripe, big, and structured, this wine's flavors are well delineated and distinct. Lives up to its moniker as "The Mouton of California," showing that state's ripe, luscious fruit within a framework of Old World complexity, structure and earthiness. Its truly unique style (by California standards) is due mainly to the fact that the wine is made from actual Bordeaux clones smuggled into the US many years ago by the proprietor. Upon opening, this was exceptionally dry and its bouquet showed hints of menthol qualities, but 60 minutes of aeration in a large decanter helped the wine unfold and resolve those issues. Drink now through 2015.

Not the best bottle of Pahlmeyer I have had. This '04 was rich, singular, and fading. The fruit profile was ok but this was no 98 pt wine. Maybe this was a bad bottle. Have always been a fan so will have to open another one later this year

About This Producer

Pahlmeyer started over 20 years ago when former trial attorney Jayson Pahlmeyer decided to turn his passion for wine into a career in Napa Valley. After studying viticulture and oenology at the University of Bordeaux, Pahlmeyer returned to the United States and produced his first wine (a Bordeaux blend) in 1986. Under the guidance of Pahlmyer, and current winemaker Erin Green, this reputation endures, annually establishing the estate as one of the finest producers of Bordeaux blends, Merlot, and Chardonnay in California.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
