($50; 100% whole clusters; just one of the six barrels was new) Saturated ruby. Crushed dark berries and a hint of graphite on the nose. Densely packed but youthfully tight, even a bit clenched, yet ultimately more giving than the 2003 version from whole clusters. The flavors of sweet black fruits, spices and woodsmoke are further brightened by a peppery topnote. Very strong material here, and it's refreshing to taste syrah from a top site that's not overwhelmed by barrel influence.

Wells Guthrie is a fervent believer that great wine begins in the vineyard. In pursuit of this, Copain has sought out vineyards with expositions, soil compositions, climates, clones, and rootstock selections capable of producing wines of distinction and singular character.

Copain's winemaking practices aim to express each site's unique qualities. Copain wines are highlighted by lower alcohols, natural vibrant acidity, gentle handling of the fruit and wine, native yeast ferments and minimal use of new oak.

Wine Varietal: Syrah


While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
