($185) Deep red. Exotic, highly perfumed aromas of raspberry, tobacco, potpourri and cedar, with a strong mineral overtone. Sweet cherry and red berry flavors are decadently sweet and complicated by notes of candied rose and licorice, with a mounting tobacco quality. Gains energy with air and finishes with sexy notes of floral pastilles and raspberry liqueur. Extremely sexy right now but I've no doubt that this will age for a very long time.

75% Tinto Fino, 25% Merlot & Malbec, released after 5 years aging, 3 in cask and 2 in bottle Very deep garnet-black colour. Complex, earthy, meaty nose with notes of warmed raspberries, fresh plums, milk chocolate and a hint of sweaty saddles. Medium to high acidity and medium to firm, slightly astringent tannins. Very long, layered finish. Tasted March 2009.

Barrel sample.Quite earthy at first, then fine, fresh elegant black fruits. Like the Reserva Especial, very fluid and silky already. Tangy, fresh and juicy and very very long. Tannins are still present but already smooth. (JH)

About This Producer

Vega Sicilia is Spain's most well known and prestigious estate. It was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who brought vine cuttings from Bordeaux of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot to plant alongside Tinto Fino. Vega Sicilia's 3 cuvees include the flagship "Unico," a multi-vintage blend called "Reserva Especial," and the more forward-style Valbuena.

Depending on the vintage, Unico is made from a blend of 80% Tempranillo with the balance of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Traditionally the wine is aged for ten years in barrel before its release. The Reserva Especial is a blend of top vintages, while the Valbuena is made from younger vines and bottled after five years. A Valbuena cuvee with three years of aging was produced until 1998, but has been discontinued.

The Reserva Especial bottlings contain a unique blend of vintages:

1979 bottling: 1962, 1964, 1968 vintages, 1980 bottling: 1960, 1962, 1972 vintages, 1990 bottling: 1968, 1970 vintages, 1993 bottling: 1970, 1972 vintages, 1996 bottling: 1973, 1981 vintages, 1997 bottling: 1981, 1986, 1990 vintages, 1998 bottling: 1981, 1990 vintages, 2000 bottling: 1985, 1990, 1994 vintages, 2004 bottling: 1985, 1990, 1991 vintages, 2005 bottling: 1985, 1991, 1996 vintages

Wine Varietal: Tempranillo

Tempranillo is Spain's noble grape. Grown mostly in northern Spain, some of the best Tempranillo wine comes from the regions of Rioja and the Ribera del Duero. This grape enjoys cooler climates and is sensitive to pests and adverse weather conditions. While Tempranillo can be bottled alone, it is often blended with other Spanish grapes such as Grenache, Carignan, and more recently, Cabernet Sauvignon. Tempranillo is also grown in the Duero region of Portugal where the grapes are commonly blended to make Port. Tempranillo wines may be consumed young, but are regarded as being at their best when aged. There are a multitude of synonyms for Tempranillo depending on where it is grown. Typical descriptors for Tempranillo include berries, plum, tobacco, vanilla, leather, meat and herbs.
