Stunning nose of rose petal, berries, sandalwood and licorice. Full-bodied, with ripe, rich tannins and a long, long finish. All there, and very exciting. 60 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 percent Merlot, 15 percent Cabernet Franc and 5 percent Petit Verdot. 2,300 cases made.

The 2004 Giusto di Notri is a terrific effort. A richly colored ruby, this beautifully proportioned barrique-aged blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot offers lovely notes of nuanced yet vibrant ripe dark fruit, graphite, minerals and toasted oak with great length, superb balance and lively acidity which gives the wine a sense of freshness as well as lift on the finish. Still backward and primary it will require at least another year or two in the bottle.

($85; a blend of 60% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot, 15% cabernet franc, and 5% petit verdot) Saturated dark ruby. An initial note of reduction dissipates with aeration to reveal pure blackberry, smoky plum and mocha aromas with enticing mineral lift and a hint of green bell pepper. Sweet and fat in the mouth, the vibrant acids helping to keep the rich, tarry berry flavors in focus. Finishes pure and long, with supple tannins and impressive density. One of the best Giustos I remember at a similar stage of development: perhaps only the '01 was superior, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Popped/poured - this showed so much intensity and power on the onset with amazingly pure, sweet fruit: raspberry and sour cherries. Extremely dark violet, nose exploded from the glass. This went pretty fast (as it was served at a party) but it was showing such greatness, wonderful complexity and a wonderful lengthy finish. This was made for red meat and paired particularly well with bacon wrapped prunes. All well integrated and balanced. Probably just getting into its drinking window. Very very exciting.

Tannins are still fairly overwhelming, even after breathing for an hour. Needs time.

About This Producer

Located in Suvereto, a small medieval Tuscan town on the south coast of Bolgheri, Tua Rita is best known for its 100% Merlot, Redigaffi, which earned a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker in the 2000 vintage. However, all the bottlings from this 55-acre estate deserve attention.

Rita Tua and her husband Virgilio Bisti bought their property in 1984 and planted 45 acres of the clay and silt soil to Cabernet and Merlot. Stefano Chioccioli presides over winemaking and produces just 3,400 cases annually, making Tua Rita wines some of the most difficult finds in Italy.
