($105) Opaque ruby. Powerful dark berry liqueur aromas are complemented by a kaleidoscopic array of fresh and dried flowers, incense, Asian spices and vanilla. Suave and silky in texture, with explosive blackberry and mulberry flavors complemented by exotic spice and floral qualities. Finishes with superbly integrated tannins and outstanding persistence, leaving sexy spice and mocha notes in its wake.

Very good wine. Dark, plums, huge wine. Perfect end to a long night of heavyweight cabs.

I drank this at a winemaker's dinner on 8/14/09. It had a FABULOUS bouquet of cherry, bacon fat, licorice, olive, vanilla, pepper and spice aromas. The palate was full bodied with prickly tannins...blackberry, black cherry, licorice, black olive, pepper and spice flavors. It was very muscular and masculine with a long finish.

this one took a long time to open up. Recommend to decant for at least an hour. Hot peppery notes that soften after awhile, with blackberry, leather.

About This Producer

Torbreck Vintners was founded by David Powell in 1994. Although located in Australia's Barossa Valley, the name comes from a forest in Scotland where Powell previously worked as a lumberjack before becoming a winemaker. Torbreck's production is centered around the classic Barossa Valley varieties of Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro (Mourvedre), and the winemaking philosophy is based on David's love for the wines of France's Rhone Valley. Along with many intensely flavored red wines blended from old-vine Shiraz and Grenache, Torbreck also produces white wines from Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
