Wine Spectator | Rating: 94

Creamy-textured and concentrated, providing the perfect foil for dense blackberry, licorice, mineral and spice flavors. Though powerful, this red also exhibits class and finesse, with real saturation on the finish and terrific length. 75 cases imported.

Burghound | Rating: 90-93

(from a .97 ha parcel of 40 year old vines and 50% new wood) A classically backward and inexpressive young Bonnes Mares nose of blueberry and violets that display an interesting note of bitter cherry that can also be found on the round, rich, muscular and taut full-bodied flavors that are quite firmly structured and wrapped in a linear, intense and long finish. Like the Amoureuses, the flavors and finish are beautifully focused and while quite focused, there is god mid-palate fat to buffer the not inconsiderable tannic spine.

($175-$217) Medium red. Dark berries complicated by smoked meat and tar on the nose. Sweet, silky and broad, with the expressive gibiers and underbrush elements I find in most of these 2004s. Initially showed less verve than the Amoureuses but with aeration this fat fellow reveals plenty of inner-palate energy. Offers compelling sweetness and flesh for a 2004. Finishes long, with fine tannins.

Big blue fruit on the nose. Blueberry and violet on the mid palate with a long finish. This is drinking exceptional well at a young age for Bonnes Mares.

About This Producer

With his son Serge, Robert Groffier creates spectacular Pinot Noirs that are the powerful benchmarks of the respective communes. The Amoureuses, with its succulent fruit, is a kaleidoscope of aromatics and flavorsl. The Clos de Beze is an effort unto itself and has a mouth-coating, sweet earthy, gamy, bramble quality that is elegant and classy. The Sentiers and Haut Doix Chambolles offer classic, high-toned red berry and cherry elements that tend toward a bit more elegance and herb in the former and supple, round vibrancy in the latter.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
