Wine Spectator | Rating: 97

Shows a very ripe nose, with rose, berry and hints of meat. Full-bodied and powerful, with chewy tannins and a long, long finish. Massive yet balanced. What a wine. The greatest Saffredi ever made. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Alicante. Better than previously reviewed. 1,750 cases made.

Le Pupille's 2004 Saffredi is a remarkable wine, in fact the aromatics alone are worth the price of admission. This French oak-aged blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Alicante possesses stunning harmony as layers of plums, blackberries, toasted oak, mint and flowers emerge from its vibrant, structured frame. The tannins are remarkably polished. From start to finish, this beautifully sculpted wine is a high class effort from proprietor Elisabetta Geppetti and oenologist Christian Le Sommer. It is highly recommended.

45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 10% Alicante The 2003-2004 winter was cold and wet, but the spring was average, and followed by a hot summer with optimal day-night temperature excursions. Thanks to the three brief nighttime thunderstorms we had in July and mid-August the grapes developed steadily, leading to an excellent harvest that produced exemplary wines of great elegance and minerality. The harvest ended October 525,000 bottles produced but not yet launched apparently.Dark crimson. Burly, rich, obviously 'warm’ nose but with attractive life and refreshment on the nose. Very full and opulent on the palate. Great flattering wine without being at all sweet. It is so obviously Tuscan despite the varietal mix! Brilliantly managed tannins. Real zest. Wonderfully complete and spicy. This is very exciting and almost impossible to spit. Fantastic balance, though obviously pretty alcoholic. Should have a very long active life.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
