Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Spectator | Rating: 92

A showy wine that has substance and depth, with lots of fresh, ripe, vibrant cherry, currant and earthy berry flavors, fine acidity and tannins and a nice splash of toasty oak. The flavors sail on through the long, complex, integrated finish. 1,485 cases made.

($60) Medium red-ruby color. Complex nose melds raspberry, currant, leather, pepper, coffee and fresh herbs. Sweet, high-toned flavors of blueberry and black raspberry, with a peppery element that does not cross over into greenness. This boasts a sappy sugar/acid balance and lovely intensity. Finishes with ripe tannins and very good length.

I have had better examples of Pride Mountain's Cabernet Franc than the 2004, which is somewhat green and light compared to other vintages, with austere tannin in the finish. Nevertheless, some attractive menthol, blueberry, white chocolate, and licorice notes are present. While it is very good, more texture and succulence would have resulted in a higher score. Drink it over the next 5-7 years.

Site Blog: The Wine Forum This wine never disappoints, my 3rd bottle and I love it just as mush a the first. I feel like this is Foley with some reigns as the alcohol is not perceptively high, the fruit is plush and persistent, with silky smooth tannins and a long, perfume and fruit laden finish. Mocha dusted cherries, blackberry, licorice and spicy/sweet oak aromas and flavors.

About This Producer

Riding the crest of the Mayacamas Mountain Range at an elevation of 2,100 feet, Pride Mountain Vineyards' 200+ acre property is bisected by the Napa/Sonoma county line. The family owned winery has been making some of Spring Mountain's best wines since 1990. Winemaker Bob Foley employs the laborious technique of picking, vinifying, and barrel-aging each of 80 vineyard blocks separately, resulting in the most ideal ripeness levels and blend quality. This integration of vineyard practices and winemaking art is done purposefully. The goal is wines that are bold and fruitful, and that speak of their mountain lineage. Considered by Robert Parker to belong in "the top echelon of California's quality wineries," wines from Pride's gravelly mountaintop vineyards are consistently highly rated and are a staple component of any classic Napa collector's cellar.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Franc

One of the five major blending grapes in Bordeaux, Cabernet Franc is also one of the genetic parents of Cabernet Sauvignon (along with Sauvignon Blanc). Lighter, fruitier, and more herbaceous than Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc grows abundantly in the Loire region of France and is commonly blended with weightier Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Franc are peppers, tobacco, and violets.
