In the wonderful 2004 vintage, owner/winemaker Peter Sisseck has outdone himself. If I were just starting to build a wine collection and had limited income, I can think of no better foundation than a dozen bottles of 2004 Flor de Pingus. In the context of the world's great wines, it is a stupendous value, a steal. It is 100% Tempranillo from very low yields and is aged 14 months in 100% new French barriques. Opaque purple in color, it emits already complex aromas of smoke, toast, coffee, blueberry, blackberry, and licorice. Lush on the palate, super ripe and sweet, as well as multi-dimensional, this great effort can be drunk now, but I'd opt for cellaring it for 6-8 years to allow further evolution.

($50) Inky ruby. Exotic aromas of blackberry, boysenberry, roasted coffee, dark chocolate and cured tobacco. Lush, sweet and smoky, with a supple texture to the deep dark berry liqueur flavors. No edges here, just luscious dark fruits and a wild smoky quality that carries into the finish. Impressively powerful and rich on the back end, with a lingering blackberry quality that won't quit.

This wine looks, smells and tates like a Pingus! its such good and powerful vintage that is difficult to imagine how much good could be the Pingus over this 'Flor' or 2nd label. Its starting to mature slowly is delicoious right now but still 2yrs from entering to peak. Peak that shall last 4-6 yrs easily. It has the ripe fruit, toasty aok bouquet and above all that the TERROIR that makes a Ribera something really special and distictive. Bravo Pingus!

Wine Varietal: Tempranillo

Tempranillo is Spain's noble grape. Grown mostly in northern Spain, some of the best Tempranillo wine comes from the regions of Rioja and the Ribera del Duero. This grape enjoys cooler climates and is sensitive to pests and adverse weather conditions. While Tempranillo can be bottled alone, it is often blended with other Spanish grapes such as Grenache, Carignan, and more recently, Cabernet Sauvignon. Tempranillo is also grown in the Duero region of Portugal where the grapes are commonly blended to make Port. Tempranillo wines may be consumed young, but are regarded as being at their best when aged. There are a multitude of synonyms for Tempranillo depending on where it is grown. Typical descriptors for Tempranillo include berries, plum, tobacco, vanilla, leather, meat and herbs.
