International Wine Cellar | Rating: 93

($90; 80% cabernet sauvignon, 11% merlot and 9% petit verdot; from Jim and Stephanie Gamble's vineyard located near Madrona Vineyard and Spottswoode) Deep ruby-red. Knockout nose combines blackcurrant, minerals, iron, licorice and leather. Suave, supple and refined; sweet but fresh and nicely delineated. This has a distinctly sophisticated texture for Napa cabernet. Finishes with sweet, late-arriving tannins and lovely verve and length.

Firm, rich and plush, offering a complex mix of loamy currant, mineral, mocha and dusty berry. Intense, concentrated, focused and balanced, this has a tight, focused aftertaste, with flavors that run deep. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot.

Wine Advocate | Rating: 92

There are approximately 500 cases of this proprietary blend made by the talented and increasingly fashionable French winemaking consultant, Philippe Melka. A combination of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot, the 2004 Metisse has tightened up since bottling, but it reveals medium to full body as well as a lovely, pure perfume of creme de cassis, white chocolate, black cherries, spice, and subtle background oak (about 75% new French barrels are utilized). Made from fruit purchased from vineyards owned by Jim and Stephanie Gamble as well as the well-known viticulturist, David Abreu, it should drink beautifully for 15 or more years.

About This Producer

Philippe and Cherie Melka, co-proprietors of Melka Wines, together share a passion and love for fine wines and a dedication to a simple, singular goal; to produce a high quality, limited production of fine wines. Philippe, born and trained in Bordeaux, is winemaking consultant to several of Napa Valley's premium wineries. Cherie, a long-time Californian, has pursued her career in the wine industry since 1988 as a trained enologist at some of California's greatest wineries.

The Metisse Proprietary Red Wine is made from a four acre vineyard located in St. Helena, California, next to Spottswoode winery, that was planted by David Abreu in 1999 to Bordeaux varieties. The soil profile, reminscent of Chateau Haut Brion, is very rich in gravels. The gravelly loamy texture allows the roots to penetrate deeply into the ground increasing the character and depth of the grapes.
