Tight on the nose, but with a great beam of red and black fruits, as well as hoisin sauce, olive, cocoa, tar and raspberry ganache. Long, lush finish pumps out darker and darker fruit. Has the racy profile of the vintage, but its range sets it apart. 4,500 cases made.

($45) Dark red. Intense strawberry and raspberry aromas, with complicating suggestions of tapenade and smoked meat. Full and deep, with lush bitter cherry and blackcurrant flavors complicated by a hint of game. Finishes on a sweet cherry note, with suave tannins and very good length. The 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape is similar in style to their 1999 but with more power. A cedary, sweet bouquet of herbes de Provence, roasted meats, kirsch liqueur, resiny notes, and perhaps incense as well, jumps from the glass of this medium to full-bodied, fragrant, savory style of wine. Its tannins are present and persistent but sweet and well-integrated. The wine reveals outstanding concentration, purity, and plenty of Provencal typicity. It should drink well for 10-15 years.

About This Producer

Le Vieux Donjon was founded by Marcel Michel, who did the first bottling at his domain in 1966. Since 1979 Marie Jose and Lucien Michel have run the property. The estate includes 14 ha of Chateauneuf du Pape, of which one ha is planted to white varieties. The vinification process is done in the traditional method with only one cuvee made of red and of white Chateauneuf du Pape. The cellars are situated on the route from Chateauneuf du Pape to Courthezon and the buildings at Avenue Saint Joseph serve as the private mansion for the family.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
