Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 96-98+

The Petite Syrah reveals a black/purple color as well as notes of graphite, smoke, blackberries, blueberries, creme de cassis, a liqueur of mineral-like intensity, and huge tannin and concentration. The 2004 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard possesses the purest fruit, density, and intensity. This is a prodigious wine that should be purchased only by those with cold cellars and good DNA for longevity as it will all age for 40-50 years.

Dark, rich, dense and loamy. Reduced now, but has great structure, with loads of ripe, concentrated blackberry and huckleberry flavors that are complex and expansive, finishing with a burst of flavor and ample tannins.

(the yield in 2004 was down 75% from a normal year; just bottled) Saturated black-ruby. Brooding, high-toned aromas of blueberry and blackberry. High-toned, sweet and extremely concentrated, with powerful brambly dark berries lifted by a peppery nuance. Superripe, hugely tannic wine that retains just enough freshness to maintain its balance.

Pure heaven. Incredibly fruit loaded, complex, integrated, the higher alcohol totally sublimated in this chewy fruit blockbuster, tannins seem so soft. This wine is spectacular now but I suspect has a long life ahead.

About This Producer

Making "big reds" has been Larry Turley's passion since giving up his co-ownership of Frog's Leap Winery in 1993. Turley Wine Cellars is run by Larry and his wife Suzanne. Larry's sister, winemaker Helen Turley, made the wines here until 1995. Now the honor goes to Ehren Jordan, who also makes wines for Neyers. With a focus on producing old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, Turley sources fruit from vineyards some of which date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Both the Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs have a dark, saturated, inky color, with intense fruit flavors that make unforgettable statements about the power and complexity these varieties may attain.

Wine Varietal: Petite Sirah

Once thought to be a relative of Syrah, this red variety actually shares DNA with the Durif grape. Wines made from Petite Sirah (or Petite Syrah) are robust, tannic, and darkly-colored. It is bottled both as a single variety and used in blends to add body. Petite Sirah grows best in warmer climates such as Argentina and California's Sonoma, Paso Robles, Amador, Mendocino, and Napa regions. Typical descriptors for Petite Sirah include black pepper, jam, and blueberry.
