Professional Reviews For This Wine

Vinfolio | Rating: 90

Being that this is the entry level Ponzi Pinot, it is admirable to find this kind of concentration. Aromas of ark cherry, sassafras and a bit of graphite smoke. Creamy and spice laden in the mouth, finishes with some crisp rhubarb and cranberry. This is indicative of their superior aging characteristics.

($35) Light red. Floral and red fruit notes on the nose, with suggestions of allspice and cinnamon. Richer, darker fruit tones on the palate, with a strong impression of bitter cherry. Round and supple, but with bright acids supporting the fruit. The tangy finish features a lingering suggestion of baking spices.

About This Producer

Dick and Nancy Ponzi are pioneer Oregon Pinot Noir producers, having founded their family winery in 1970. They have been at the forefront of most major winemaking and viticulture innovation in the state ever since. The Ponzi name is synonymous with the rise of the Willamette Valley as a major winegrowing region, and their commitment to the area manifests itself in their constant promotion of Oregon wines. Ponzi remains a truly family-run operation, with daughter Luisa Ponzi as winemaker and second-generation family members running the business side. In addition to Pinot Noir, the winery produces Pinot Gris and Blanc, Chardonnay, and Oregon oddities Arneis and Dolcetto.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
