The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva blossoms on the palate in a richly-textured, layered expression of Sangiovese that is a marvel to behold. The fruit remains extremely primary, and this is a Riserva that will require quite a bit of patience. The finesse of the tannins and the luxurious expansiveness of the fruit hint at what is to come. The future can only be bright for a wine of this exceptional pedigree. Might the 2004 be a modern-day version of the 1982?

A very raisiny Brunello that verges on Amarone in style and character. Full-bodied, round and Porty, with dried fruits and round tannins. A little overdone, but some may love this full-throttle style of Brunello. Fascinating.

Good full saturated red. The aromas of ripe red cherry, violet, rose and mocha are downright seductive. Deep, sweet and lush but with a juicy character and attractive floral lift to the ripe red cherry, licorice, anise and tobacco flavors. Verging on fat but with firm acids providing adequate support. Finishes with substantial breadth, a healthy dusting of tannins, and late notes of minerals and leather. Perhaps a slightly less fine rendition of Brunello Riserva than some previous vintages from this estate, but a very serious and satisfying wine.

Site Blog: The Wine Forum Rose, cherry and tobacco. Down the middle for sango-grosso, but that's where it starts. Good complexity and really good purity. Dusty tannins and a fresh finish. #italy #brunello

About This Producer

One of the greatest of all Brunelli hails from the tiny Pertimali estate, nestled on a slope in the prime Montosoli cru to the northeast of Montalcino, where the Sassetti family has produced wine and olive oil for more than a century. The Montosoli hill is historically reputed for wines that are a perfect balance of the power of southern Montalcino with the finesse of the north. Where most producers own properties in both zones and blend to achieve that balance, in Montosoli, nature does all of the work. In the vineyard and in the cellar, father Livio and his two sons combine the best of both innovation and tradition, taking advantage of modern equipment and winemaking but also observing natural phenomena such as the phases of the moon. The result is wines with rich, deep, and often exotically perfumed fruit, more akin to the style of Burgundy. In addition to Brunello and Rosso, Pertimali also produces the lush Super-Tuscan "Vigna Fili di Seta," a barrique-aged blend of 60% Sangiovese and 40% Cabernet. Beginning with the 1997 Brunello di Montalcino, the label now emphasizes the proprietor's name, Livio Sassetti, rather than the estate name, Pertimali.

Wine Varietal: Sangiovese

Italyâ??s most popular grape, Sangiovese is the top grape used in Tuscany including Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and many of Italyâ??s â??Super Tuscans.â?? At least 14 clones of Sangiovese exist which are grouped into the Sangiovese grosso and Sangiovese piccolo families. Sangiovese thrives in a warm climate and consists of over 10% of Italyâ??s vineyard acreage (covering almost a quarter million acres). Over the past decade Sangiovese has become increasingly popular and successful in California as well. Typical descriptors for Sangiovese include candied or dried cherry, citrus, leather, violets and tea.
