Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 93

Fashioned from a tightly spaced parcel, the deep ruby/purple-tinged 2004 Pinot Noir High Density boasts a beautiful sweet nose of blue and black fruits as well as an opulent, voluptuous texture, medium to full body, and loads of flowers, fruit, and a hint of forest floor. Made from 100% destemmed fruit, it is a fleshy, rich Pinot to consume over the next 5-7 years.

About This Producer

In 1996 Melville Vineyards made the bold move from Knights Valley to the Santa Rita Hills appellation, where Ron Melville and his sons set up the estate property with a focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Santa Rita microclimate, with its coastal winds and fog, provided the Melvilles the perfect locale for their 139 planted acres of Pinot, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Viognier. Winemaker Greg Brewer, of Brewer-Clifton fame, oversees production at Melville.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
