The top cuvee here, the 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee du Quet, which is from a single vineyard on the high, rocky plateau of Chateauneuf du Pape near Cabrieres and Gardiole, has a saturated ruby/purple color and a tight but gorgeous nose of kirsch liqueur, raspberries, plum, seaweed, and licorice. Medium to full-bodied with ripe tannin, superb depth, and a layered, concentrated mouthfeel, this is a beauty to drink over the next 12-15+ years.

($65) Deep ruby. Vibrant cherry and red berry aromas, accented by baking spices and cracked pepper. Supple, full and sweet, with a deep cherry liqueur flavor lifted by gentle acidity on the back. Finishes supple, chewy and sweet, with noteworthy length. (Wines of France, Mountainside, NJ)

Very lush, modern style. This almost oozes raspberry ganache and fig paste flavors, with lots of bass thanks to bold, toasty cocoa and mocha notes that dominate for now. But there's a fine minerality buried beneath it all, so cellar. 300 cases imported.

About This Producer

Mas de Boislauzon is owned and run by brother and sister Daniel and Christine Chaussy, the sixth generation of family wine growers in the region. The pair produces Chateauneuf du Pape and Cotes du Rhone wines from 25 ha. of AOC vineyards.

Vines are grown on calcareous soils with a high percentage of galets (round stones typical of the region), and vineyards are tended using traditional viticulture techniques. The Chaussy siblings age their wines in both neutral barrels and concrete vats. Red wines are blends of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, and Carignan. White wines are blends of Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, and Bourboulenc.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
