International Wine Cellar | Rating: 91

($42; bottled in February) Good bright red-ruby. Perfumed aromas of raspberry and loamy earth; this conveys an impression of sweet Burgundian funk. Intensely flavored and bright, with pure flavors of raspberry and violet. Lovely ripe acids give precision to the wine. There's a slight wildness to the berry fruit but little of the candied character apparent in many North Coast pinots from the 2004 vintage. Finishes firm and bright. From vines picked mostly in August.

Very nice. Smooth. Nice finish. Went well with our baked organic chicken dinner with spinach/bacon sauteed.

About This Producer

Etude was established in 1982 by wine consultant Tony Soter to produce high quality Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir sourced from top growers. The brand embarked on an estate-focused philosophy in 1999 with the purchase of a former pasture at the base of Sonoma Mountain. The sustainably-produced wines include Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and five estate-grown Pinot Noirs. Additionally, their appellation-focused Cabernet Sauvignon program offers selections from St. Helena, Oakville and Rutherford, as well as a Napa Valley bottling. Winemaker is Jon Priest.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
