Burghound | Rating: 91

(the vine ages in this 5+ ha vineyard run from 17 to 70+ years of age. The 2004 Clos des Epeneaux was bottled in August) A touch of reduction detracts only mildly from the ripe and expressive nose of earth and game followed by delicious, deep and moderately structured medium full flavors that coat the mouth with sap and the texture is pure velvet. There is a firm tannic backbone yet the tannins are fine and this should age well.

($78; bottled in August of 2006; 13.2% natural alcohol) Medium red. Complex, musky aromas of dark raspberry, tobacco, iron, mocha and game. Sweet, supple and expressive, with mocha and smoke notes accenting the red fruit flavors. This is smooth and long for a 2004 Pommard, finishing with fine, dusty tannins and excellent palate coverage. Only some vines at the top of the clos were hailed on in 2004, and this juice went into a separate wine, said Leroux.

Very dark. A brooding witches brew. Most impressive. Sappy palate entry. Almost burnt fruit flavours. Very different! Very, very substantial. Creamy, satin texture. Very, very fine and lovely. Very long. (cask sample)

Vibrant, offering bright black cherry, kirsch and chocolate notes backed by lively acidity and firm tannins. Balanced and almost ready to enjoy, with a sweet yet dense finish.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
