Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 89

($38) Dark red. Plum, cherry and smoked meat on the brooding, ripe nose. Dense and thick, the dark fruit flavors accented by notes of espresso, black tea and licorice. Serious, almost musclebound pinot with considerable heft and power. Finishes on a sappy, almost viscous note of sweet kirsch but with no lack of definition.

Shows a very full ripe nose of cherry, salty blackberry and smoke. A huge wine on the palate loaded with extracted black and red fruits, hints of smoke, crème brulee, and lead pencil. A bold wine.

About This Producer

Elk Cove owners Joe and Pat Campbell began producing Pinot Noir in 1977 and have kept the business in the family as their son Adam is now full-time winemaker. Fruit sources include 180 acres of estate vineyards on four sites in the Northern Willamette Valley. From these low-yielding, steep-sloped vineyards, the winery produces an array of wines including Pinot Gris and Blanc, Riesling, Syrah, a sparkling wine, and of course Pinot Noir. The recent addition of Five Mountain Vineyard continues the long held philosophy of using mature, established vineyard sites.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
