Wine Advocate | Rating: 94

This impeccably made wine, the home project of two mothers, Lisa Behrens of Behrens and Hitchcock (now known as Erna Schein) and Francoise Peschon, Araujo Estate's winemaker, is a 425-case blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc. Fashioned from multiple Calistoga vineyard sites, it is a beautiful, deep ruby/purple-tinged wine offering notes of lead pencil shavings, sweet black currants, spring flowers, and subtle new oak. While built on finesse, elegance, and precision, it reveals abundant flavor intensity, power, richness, and length. Drink this impeccably symmetrical, complex 2004 over the next 15-20 years.

Good deep ruby-red. Currant and licorice on the nose. Suave on entry, then a bit porty in the middle, with cough syrup and dark chocolate dominating. The fairly substantial tannins come late, allowing the wine's lush, primary, chocolatey finishing flavors to expand and linger.

Aromas of herb, mocha, chocolate and currant turn supple and graceful on the palate, with the right level of intensity and richness. Gains depth and complexity on the finish.

Very elegant, balanced, delicious wine. Very nice soft mouth-feel. Complex nose. $65 and worth it.

Site Blog: WiredJC Another lovely bottle. This is some very well made wine. Not many notes as was consumed along with several other bottles over a leisurely dinner with friends. Solid 91 points.

Not sure what the hoopla is. Big red fruit, almost portlike, very hot (surprised its only 14.3%) and tart finish.

About This Producer

Beginning with the 2000 vintage, Lisa Drinkward and Francoise Peschon, friends and mothers, began creating what was soon to become a major classic in the annals of Napa Valley startups. Both partners came in with excellent credentials - Drinkward, viticulturist at Behrens & Hitchcock (now known as Erna Schein), and Peschon, winemaker at Araujo (she recently transitioned to a consultant position there). Sourcing their fruit from small family-owned vineyards in Calistoga and producing no more than 500 cases, the pair dispels the myth that you need a sophisticated marketing plan and a fancy tasting room to compete in Napa Valley. If anything, their model is emulated more and more. Critics have been following it for a few years and there never seems to be enough to go around.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
