Michel Rolland has been brought in as a consulting winemaker by proprietor Naoko Dalla Valle, and while no Maya was made in 2004, there are 400 cases of the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, a blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc. It exhibits superb intensity, suggesting this estate, which was largely replanted over the last few years, is on the rebound. The 2004 offers beautiful notes of creme de cassis, minerals, spice box, and cedar, a structured style, and plenty of sweet tannin. Give it 3-4 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following 25 years.

Has excellent structure, with firm, ripe plum and currant fruit dialed in, with hints of anise, cedary oak, spice and floral notes. Rich and concentrated, this ends with a long, vibrant, supple and harmonious finish. 400 cases made.

($130) Good deep red-ruby. Enticing aromas of black cherry, cassis, lead pencil and sweet, sexy oak. Rich, layered and sweet, with harmonious ripe acidity that will not get in the way of enjoying this wine early for its appealing black cherry and sexy oak flavors. Very pliant, lush wine with sweet tannins that build with aeration. About 30% of this and the 2005 cabernet came from vines planted in the mid-'70s, but these vines were pulled up after the 2005 harvest.

One hour decant, then drank over three hours. Nice wine, tannins became more pronounced and chewy after exposure to air for first two hours.

About This Producer

From vineyards set 400 feet above the floor of Napa Valley, two critically-acclaimed powerhouse wines are crafted. Both the Cabernet Sauvignon (which includes just a touch of estate Cabernet Franc) and the Maya (a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc) showcase Oakville fruit in its most concentrated intensity. Production is limited to micro-quantities, making these wines sought-after prizes for collectors and wine enthusiasts alike.

Gustav and Naoko Dalla Valle bought their family estate in 1982, realizing their vision of producing world-class wine. The first vintages were 1986 for the Cabernet and 1988 for the Maya, which went on to earn a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker for the 1992 vintage. Naoko Dalla Valle has maintained sole responsibility for the vineyards and winery since her husband's death in 1995. French enologist Michel Rolland consults bi-annually on winemaking and blending decisions.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
