($60; 72) Deep violet. Enormous, room-filling bouquet encompasses the full range of red and dark berry tones, along with an intense garrigue component. Powerful and quite sweet, with dense dark berry and cherry flavors framed by solid tannins. The fruit expands on the building finish, penetrating every nook of the palate and finishing solid and chewy. Pretty stunning stuff.

The 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee du Papet exhibits sweet, elegant black cherry fruit notes intermixed with some licorice and tobacco leaf. It is layered, medium to full-bodied, ripe for the vintage, but does not have as much concentration as I had expected from last year. Nevertheless, this is a beauty that should drink graciously for 12 or more years.

Rich, macerated black cherry nose with a hint of bonfires. Very rich start and then some beef extract notes plus an enthralling cocktail of more fruit-derived flavours. Good freshness too. Very beguiling. Long.

some green note on the first day. The second day, it gained some weight but became quite generic. Did not get to try on the third day.

About This Producer

The estate, run by the esteemed Sabon family, can trace its history back to 1547. It includes 25 hectares of Chateauneuf du Pape and parcels in Le Pied de Baud, lieu-dit Monalivet, and les Gallimardes, as well as 15 hectares in Cotes du Rhone. Making wine is still a family affair, and three brothers - Jean-Claude, Pierre and Bernard - run the property, with Jean-Claude's son Thierry, the current winemaker, trained in the tradition of the domaine since day one. The wines are a majority Grenache, with Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault completing the blends. Mont-Olivet produces a red and white Chateuneuf du Pape, and a red and white Cotes du Rhone. The "Cuvee du Papet" is only bottled in the most exceptional vintages.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
