Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 91(+?)

($35; 100% garnacha, from vines reportedly 80 to 100 years old) Deep ruby. Powerful, ripe, spicy scents of cherry, cured meat and cracked pepper. Very intense on the palate, with the cherry flavor framed by solid but not strident tannins. Finishes youthfully taut, with a repeating pepper note and impressive length. Give this some cellar time, or decant it for an hour. (European Cellars, Charlotte, NC)

Site Blog: St. Henry Brewery - brewing 'til the bitter end! Dark ruby, purple color. Pleasant but restrained nose of cassis, lavender and leather. Initially an intense burst of plums and tannins slowly evolve into a blueberry and blackberry medley on the mid-palate, with enticing hints of violet. Tannins live long and overstimulate the receptors, which suggests a few more years in the cellar before reaching its peak, but by no means is it shabby if you have to raid your stash for some good times.

Jennifer liked it more than I did. Seemed a little one-dimensional. Lots of grape, but not much spice or earthy flavors.

About This Producer

Created by Juan Carlos Lopez de la Calle, of Artadi fame, this estate is located in the Navarra region of northern Spain, bound by the Pyrenees to the north and the Ebro river valley to the south. What really shines here is the purity of fruit balanced with intensity and elegant, rounded tannins. Artazu wines tend to be wonderfully approachable when young.

Wine Varietal: Grenache

One of the most widely planted varieties in the world, Grenache is most well known as the base variety in wines from the Southern Rhone, such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Cotes-du-Rhone, and Gigondas. Grenache thrives in hot, arid climates all over the world particularly in the Mediterranean and Australia. Its origin is believed to be the Roussillon region of southern France (formerly Spain - where it is grown today and is known as Garnacha). Grenache is used in blends to round out Rhone-style reds to soften harsher varieties such as Syrah and Carignan. It is also used for rose wines. Typical descriptors for Grenache include raspberries, strawberries. black currants, black cherries, black olives, coffee, gingerbread, honey, leather, black pepper, tar, and herbes de Provence.
