The 2004 Pagos Viejos is inky purple with a sublime nose of pain grille, spice box, cherries, raspberries, and wild blue fruits. This is followed by a dense, plush, full-flavored, sexy wine with perfect balance and remarkable elegance for a wine so powerful. Although it can be enjoyed now, it deserves a minimum of a decade of cellaring after which it should drink well through 2047. Kudos to Bodegas Artadi for this tour de force!

Vibrant purplish crimson. Very, very youthful - this practically smells of the fermentation vat. Very lively and lifted and dancing - great refreshment value. Slightly dry, tight, fine tannins on the finish. Very zesty and a mile from blockbuster. Really quite a ballet dancer.

($95) Dark violet. Wild, pungent aromas of red and dark berries, candied cherry, blood orange, dark chocolate, clove and cinnamon, with notes of vanilla and fresh rose. Very firmly built, with impressively deep, sweet red fruit flavors that are almost liqueur-like in their power and breadth. Intensely spicy and sweet on the long, succulent finish, the tannins almost completely absorbed by the luscious fruit. There's no Grandes Anades in '04, so this release includes all of the fruit that would otherwise go into that high-end bottling.

Powerful. This mouthfilling red is thick with roasted plum, coffee and beef flavors. Muscular tannins dominate now, but floral and mineral notes emerge on the finish. Has impressive concentration and good balance. 700 cases imported.

Not at the level I expected :( Somehow monolithic, closed/mut nose, nice medium-full body palate in where a dark ruby color where clearly distinguish. Then in the mouth you taste the fruit but not balance with the rest of components. I have to admit that after 1hr open it starts to improve a little specially in the finish. Lets hope it may stills more time and be in a mute phase. I wasn't his night....? This wine isn't cheap, bottle around $100 bucks.

About This Producer

Of this esteemed winery, importer Eric Solomon writes: "Artadi is about purity of extracted fruit with almost Burgundian textures. In fact, critics have often compared these wines to the top wines of Chambolle-Musigny and other top appellations of Burgundy. They are some of the most extraordinary examples of Tempranillo in the world."

Winemaker Juan Carlos Lopez de la Calle turned this former small cooperative into a Tempranillo powerhouse on the solid foundation of his elegant wines. Since the mid-1990s, when de la Calle took control of the property, it has grown to include 75 ha of vineyards in the high altitude, chalky soils of Rioja. French oak complements the mineral-laden fruit in the top cuvees. See all Spain producers

Wine Varietal: Tempranillo

Tempranillo is Spain's noble grape. Grown mostly in northern Spain, some of the best Tempranillo wine comes from the regions of Rioja and the Ribera del Duero. This grape enjoys cooler climates and is sensitive to pests and adverse weather conditions. While Tempranillo can be bottled alone, it is often blended with other Spanish grapes such as Grenache, Carignan, and more recently, Cabernet Sauvignon. Tempranillo is also grown in the Duero region of Portugal where the grapes are commonly blended to make Port. Tempranillo wines may be consumed young, but are regarded as being at their best when aged. There are a multitude of synonyms for Tempranillo depending on where it is grown. Typical descriptors for Tempranillo include berries, plum, tobacco, vanilla, leather, meat and herbs.
