We should all be happy about this as the 2004 Grenache is easily one of the top examples of the variety I've tasted from California. Flirting with perfection and reminding me of Clos Saint Jean's Deus Ex Machina from Chateauneuf du Pape (despite being 100% Grenache and having no Mourvedre in the blend), it will easily stand toe to toe with the greatest southern Rhones out there. Sporting a semi-opaque, youthful ruby color, it offers spectacular aromas and flavors of smoked black cherries, melted licorice, graphite, smoked meats and roasted herbs that continue to evolve and gain in richness and depth with time in the glass. Full-bodied and decadent, yet far from a heavyweight, it is graceful and lively on the palate with no hard edges, perfect balance and a seamless, elegant profile that shows only hints of maturity. When all is said and done, this incredible wine will have 20-25 years of total evolution, and hats off to John for this awesome effort.

Superrich and exotic. A sheer delight to drink, with loads of flavor. Wonderful incense, anise, wild berry and huckleberry fruit is ripe and vivid, with just the right amount of acidity and tannins. Ends with a medley of berry and road tar. 100 cases made.

($74) Deep medium ruby. Exotic nose combines dark cherry, truffle, printer's ink, toffee and mocha. Fleshy, sweet and superconcentrated, with a distinctly carnal quality to the flavors of raspberry, truffle and licorice. Impressively lush and broad on the back, finishing with suave tannins and terrific persistence. A very complete and deep California grenache.

About This Producer

Alban Vineyards is a California wine estate producing various Rhone style blends and varietal wine. The winery is located in Edna Valley, near Arroyo Grande in the southern corner of San Luis Obispo County.

Starting in 1985, John Alban planted grapes for other people until he bought an estate in 1989. With a focus on creating wines made from Rhone Valley varieties, Alban became one of the pioneers in the Rhone Rangers movement, and is considered one of the most influential American Rhone producers.

Within a 250-acre (100 ha) area, the vineyard area extends 60 acres (24 ha), and is planted with varieties Syrah, Viognier and Roussanne. Grenache and Roussanne are also sourced from vineyards located in the warmer Paso Robles AVA.

Among the vineyard designate wines produced are the Lorraine Vineyard, Reva Vineyard Syrah and Seymour's Vineyard Syrah. Alban also produces Pandora, a blend of Grenache and Syrah, and a botrytized dessert wine.

Wine Varietal: Grenache

One of the most widely planted varieties in the world, Grenache is most well known as the base variety in wines from the Southern Rhone, such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Cotes-du-Rhone, and Gigondas. Grenache thrives in hot, arid climates all over the world particularly in the Mediterranean and Australia. Its origin is believed to be the Roussillon region of southern France (formerly Spain - where it is grown today and is known as Garnacha). Grenache is used in blends to round out Rhone-style reds to soften harsher varieties such as Syrah and Carignan. It is also used for rose wines. Typical descriptors for Grenache include raspberries, strawberries. black currants, black cherries, black olives, coffee, gingerbread, honey, leather, black pepper, tar, and herbes de Provence.
