($55) Deep ruby. Smoky red berry aromas offer striking precision and lift; floral and mineral qualities appear with air, adding a seductive character. Racy and bright in the mouth, displaying an impressive array of concentrated red fruit flavors, with gentle tannins contributing shape. Finishes with impressive cut and persistence. Very suave stuff.

Cask sample. Cool with lots of mulberries, but fresh too. Very open, rich and a real step up from previous vintages of this regular bottling. Complete and glossy. Very long and satisfying. Production 170,000 bottles.

Excellent, classical terroir expression of a good Ribera del Duero. A beauty, earthy, cedary, ripe fruit, leathery in where it combines finnese, power, balance in great structure. Is maturing in impressive way, should hit the stride within 12-18 months and should stay by 2-5 yrs after that

About This Producer

Founded in 1999 and located in Ribera del Duero, on Spain's north-central plateau, Bodegas Aalto produces critically acclaimed wines from old vine (30- to 90-years old) Tempranillo. Aged for two or more years in a combination of new and neutral French and American oak, Aalto's wines are on track to compete with the neighboring Ribera estates of Vega Sicilia and Tinto Pesquera.

Wine Varietal: Tempranillo

Tempranillo is Spain's noble grape. Grown mostly in northern Spain, some of the best Tempranillo wine comes from the regions of Rioja and the Ribera del Duero. This grape enjoys cooler climates and is sensitive to pests and adverse weather conditions. While Tempranillo can be bottled alone, it is often blended with other Spanish grapes such as Grenache, Carignan, and more recently, Cabernet Sauvignon. Tempranillo is also grown in the Duero region of Portugal where the grapes are commonly blended to make Port. Tempranillo wines may be consumed young, but are regarded as being at their best when aged. There are a multitude of synonyms for Tempranillo depending on where it is grown. Typical descriptors for Tempranillo include berries, plum, tobacco, vanilla, leather, meat and herbs.
