Comprised of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon blended with 10% Merlot. The nose shows fresh lavender and spice. The palate showcases spicy cherry and black fruits with some tarry undertones, java, mocha, earth and hints of vanilla and cassis.

There are only about 200 cases of the debut vintage, the 2003 Proprietary Red Wine State Lane Vineyard (a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot). The Kapcsandys were unsure whether or not they would release this effort, but it has actually aged reasonably well, coming across as a dark ruby-colored, medium-bodied, floral-infused effort with plenty of sweet fruit, aromatic complexity (it smells like a hypothetical blend of classified growth Margaux and Graves), and a fine finish. It should drink well for 10-15 years.

($90) Good deep red. Black plum, tar, licorice and lavender on the nose. Medium-bodied wine, with a slight tart edge to the plum and licorice flavors. A tad dry on the back.

About This Producer

The historic State Lane Vineyard, in the heart of the Napa Valley, was first leased by Beringer Estates in 1972 and was used to launch Beringer's famous Private Reserve Cabernet. The Kapcsandys purchased the property in May, 2000 and in 2001 teamed up with legendary winemaker Helen Turley and her viticulturist husband John Wetlaufer. After careful research, they discovered a unique vineyard with multiple micro-geological conditions and decided to redevelop the vineyard for its utmost potential and produce world-class red wines under the Kapcsandy label. The first two vintages - 2003 and 2004 - were produced by Helen Turley. For 2005 Rob Lawson, the winemaker at Napa Wine Company for the past 16 years, was brought aboard and in 2007, Denis Malbec became the sole winemaking consultant.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
