Professional Reviews For This Wine

(from a tiny .20 ha parcel of 100 year old vines) This rivals the Bèze for aromatic complexity though here the aromas are more in the dark and somber fruit notes that already display the initial traces of secondary development followed by dense, sappy and very serious full-bodied flavors underpinned by firm but not hard tannins and huge length. This is a big and very powerful effort that does not lack for grace or style. It's not entirely clear how this will develop but it is delicious. That said, I'm opting to be very conservative on the drinking window for fear that this will develop too quickly relative to the underlying structure.

($200) Full ruby-red, clearly deeper than the regular Clos Vougeot bottling. Precise aromas of black cherry, minerals and underbrush, with an exotic suggestion of cherry liqueur. Creamy-sweet, silky and fat, with a high-pH mouth feel and distinctly candied fruit aspect. A distinctly lush wine with a '47-like texture. Finishes sweet and round, with utterly seamless tannins and strong lingering spice character.

There are only 3 barrels, almost 75 cases, of the magnificent 2003 Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes. Its boisterous aromatics reveal licorice, plums, cherries, and blackberries. Sumptuous, fleshy, and concentrated, it is a glorious, stupendously sweet wine. Medium to full-bodied, satin-textured, and sappy, this wine is so exquisitely ripe, its tannin, discernable in its hugely impressive finish, is plump and almost viscous. Drink this gem over the next 15+ years.

About This Producer

Jean Raphet finally passed control of the domaine to his son Gerard in 2002, though his son had been tending the vineyards for over a decade. The wines from this property are remarkable and brilliant renditions of Pinot Noir. Equal parts caressing finesse, fruit purity and aromatic bliss, they have excellent track records at all levels. From the Bourgogne, to the mere cases production of the Grand Cru Clos de Beze, Raphet wines are consistently palate pleasing.
