The 2003's sensational aromatics offer up scents of blueberries, black raspberries, currants, subtle wood spice and spring flower garden. Rich and full-bodied with exquisite purity, an ethereal elegance yet serious substance, texture and length, this is an example of great winemaking and viticulture. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have a first growth-like terroir. Still in its pre-adolescence, this beauty should age effortlessly for another quarter of a century. Bravo!

A finely focused nose of mint, cassis, structured blackberry, the fruit is superbly polished and balanced. Black figs and mocha lend filling to the finish.

($110; includes 4% cab franc) Ruby-red. Complex aromas of currant, plum, leather, tobacco, cedar and menthol, along with a faint dusty note. Then supple, rich and layered, with a very smooth texture. Not yet as sweet as the 2004 but plenty full in the mouth and more suave. Finishes with serious tongue-coating tannins that call for at least five or six years of cellaring.

Subtle aromas of red currant, black cherry and plum carry over to the palate in an elegant, supple manner. Excellent balance, depth, complexity and length. The finish is long and persistent, keeping the emphasis on the fruit. 3,699 cases made.

Still very purple. Some floral notes on the nose ? extremely youthful! Rather similar to 2002 ? though with more acidity and bite. More prominent tannins because there is decidedly less flesh here. This may outlast it and even overtake it though? Briney finish. (LM)

Warm, dark red berries on the nose and palate accompanied by very soft tannins that somewhat lose their structure into a long finish. I also noted cedar and saddle leather. Didn't wow me as much as my high expectations.

About This Producer

Spottswoode is a family-owned historic vineyard and winery renowned for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Established in 1882 by George Schonewald, the estate is distinguished by the historic Victorian home depicted on the Spottswoode label. Spottswoode was christened by Mrs. Albert Spotts, who owned the property from 1910 until its purchase in 1972 by Mary Weber Novak and her late husband, Dr. Jack Novak. The first Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon was produced in 1982, exactly one hundred years after the estate's founding.

The Novak family is committed to producing wines that faithfully reflect their grape origins. Each Spottswoode wine is known for its refined elegance, balance, and classic structure. Dedicated stewards of their property, the Novaks have farmed organically since 1985 and have pioneered the restoration of their local watershed.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
