Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 96

The powerful, complex, dark purple-hued 2003 Shiraz RWT, which comes from the Barossa and spends 15 months in 70% new and 30% used 300 liter French oak barrels, boasts blackberry, kirsch liqueur, mulberry, soy, and road tar aromas. Full-bodied, dense, and rich with beautifully integrated oak, it is more evolved and forward than the Magill or the Grange.

Big, rich and vibrant, a spectacular mouthful of cherry, currant and a subtle range of peppers, spices and creaminess, finishing with refined tannins and a silky texture that lets the fruit and spice sail on and on.

($75) Dark red. Smoky, toasty aromas of blackberry, creme de cassis, licorice candy, cappuccino, mocha and fresh rose. Broad and sweet, the fruit taking a turn to the red side, showing ripe raspberry and red plum preserve flavors accented by spicy oak. While undeniably ripe, the fruit has clarity and plenty of energy. Finishes quite long, with the tannins sneaking in but not at the expense of the fruit.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
