Liqueur of minerals in addition to lemon oil and egg custard might well be a worthy descriptor for the 2003 Chardonnay Durell Vineyard. Light gold with a greenish hue, this wine is a bit more evolved in color than the McCrea Vineyard, but generous, full-bodied, and rich, with uplifting, vibrant acidity, giving freshness and zest to all the component parts. This is a candidate for 4-5 years of aging, although I suspect it is going to last longer.

($65) Medium yellow. Warm gingery spices and nutty oak add interest to the pineapple aroma. Lush, sweet and spicy, if a bit youthfully subdued, with very ripe notes of peach and nectarine. This comes across as less obviously ripe than the McCrea or Dutton Ranch bottlings-or is it simply more understated? There's lovely acidity and very good persistence. The crop level here was half of normal due to a poor set.

Drinking well now, with hints of some aged characteristics to it. There is still great acid keeping the wine fresh. Lemon and butterscotch. This has plenty of life left in it.

Really lovely nose, plenty of fruit with some mineral elements. Very balanced flavors, with citrus and pear fruits and acid, a hint of the classic buttery mouth-feel of a Kistler wine. Drinking well now but likely to be good for several more years.

Still bright, fresh and lovely after all these years! Holding up very well. Well-balanced with the oak and fruit integrated very nicely. Seamless from beginning to end. Banana, cream, oak spice and lemon citrus flavors come together to create a magically delicious drinking experience. If you really like the aged characteristics of chardonnay (nuttiness, smoke, etc.) I think this could last for another year or two, but its drinking really well right now.

With a bright yellow-gold color in the glass, this classy and perfectly mature 03 CA Chard shows an evolved, yet still fresh nose of mineral driven citrus and green apple mingled with butterscotch and lemon meringue. The palate is balanced and supported by a backbone of ripe acidity. This is a great example of mature chardonnay and perfect to drink now.

About This Producer

Kistler Vineyards is a small family-owned winery located in the Russian River Valley specializing in Burgundian style Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Since its first vintage in 1979, the winery has grown in size to produce 25,000 cases per year. Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler share the winemaking responsibilities, while Mark also acts as chemist and business manager. The winery, completed in 1992, is located on their Vine Hill Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. Kistler's fruit is sourced from various vineyards across Napa and Sonoma counties. Kistler Vineyards' wines are released semi-annually and almost exclusively to its mailing list.

Wine Varietal: Chardonnay

Arguably the best dry white wine grape out there, Chardonnay is grown all over the globe. In addition to being the backbone of fine white Burgundies, Chardonnay is also one of the three major grape varieties used in producing Champagne. Susceptible to a myriad of complications, Chardonnay berries are relatively small, thin-skinned, fragile, and oxidize easily. Chardonnay grapes can be sensitive to winemaking techniques and more difficult to handle from harvest to bottling than many other varieties. Some producers will use malolactic fermentation (where harsher malic acid is turned into softer lactic acid and carbon dioxide) to reduce crispness and acidity and add a creamy, buttery texture to wines. The "oaky" character of some Chardonnays comes from fermenting or aging which takes place in oak barrels. Once barrel-aged, Chardonnay may take on notes of vanilla or toast. While Chardonnay is produced worldwide, the best can be found in France, the United States, Argentina, Chile, Australia, Italy, New Zealand, and South Africa. Typical descriptors for Chardonnay include mineral, green apple, citrus, tropical fruits, vanilla, butter and smokiness.
