Even better, the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin was smoking good, with awesome herbes de Provence, pepper, garrigue and sweet Grenache-driven fruit. Full-bodied and rich, with sweet tannin, I loved it, and would plan on drinking bottles over the coming couple of years as well.

Lilting, perfumy style, with alluring violet, raspberry, black cherry and plum notes that glide across the palate. This gains intensity through the finish, picking up the vintage's tarry aspect, yet stays remarkably fresh and Burgundian in style. 1,250 cases made.

($55) Bright ruby. Bright aromas of red berries and rhubarb, laced with floral notes of rose and violet. Supple and silky in the mouth, with tangy strawberry, raspberry and mocha flavors lingering through the gentle, sweet, very persistent finish. "My Burgundy," says Sabon.

Very deep red/almost balck colour; strong spicey notes on the nose; very rich and warm on the palate with notes of black cherries and cloves; lovely and not at its peak yet

Sweet nose, rich, grenache at its best. Can last many more years.

I am a Janasse fan but this bottle was only ok compared to many others I've had. Very berry and almost overly so. Nose was complex but the wine itself seemed to be a bit less so. Still quite good but not the normal level I expect from Janasse.

About This Producer

Up until 1973, patriarch and proprietor Aime Sabon sold the entire production of this estate to cooperatives. In 1991, his son Christophe took over the running of the Domaine La Janasse, named after a family camp in Courthezon. The grapes that go into the "Cuvee Chaupin" come from a parcel of vines planted in 1912 and produce the pure, graceful, yet opulent and firmly structured wines for which the domaine has become renowned. Roughly a quarter of these wines are AOC Chateauneuf du Pape.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
