Also brilliant, and only a small step back from the top cuvee, the 2003 Hermitage Marquise de la Tourette boasts fabulous aromas and flavors of blackcurrants, licorice, toast, spice-box and dried underbrush that flow to a full-bodied, awesomely concentrated Hermitage that stays fresh and lively on the palate. A thrill ride of a drink now, it will continue to shine through 2028.

Fresh and racy, with lots of red currant and raspberry fruit backed by a strong, minerally spine. Darker toast, spice and fruit notes emerge on the finish, but this stays remarkably fresh and open throughout. Deftly done. 1,065 cases made.

($71) Medium ruby. Exotic aromas of ripe fig, mulberry, plum and dark cherry complicated by resiny and floral nuances. Concentrated and powerful on the palate, with a dense, chewy texture and very ripe berry and plum flavors. Finishes ripe but quite tannic, with a deep note of bitter chocolate.

dark cherry, still tannic, needed time to open.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
