The 2003 St. Eden comes from an 11-acre rocky knoll on the northern side of the Oakville Crossroad that consists of pure red soils. It is the most evolved and forward of these 2003 Bond wines. Lots of cedar, chocolate, roasted herb, lavender and spice box notes emerge from this complex Pauillac-like effort. Medium to full-bodied and fully mature, it is more evolved than its siblings, revealing sweet tannin as well as a spicy, earthy finish. Owners are advised to drink it over the next decade.

($230) Good deep ruby. High-pitched nose dominated by black cherry. Dense and sweet but with a light touch. Distinctly minerally, sharply delineated wine that nonetheless seems less dense than the 2004 example. Still quite youthfully tight and firmly tannic, with an almost medicinal austerity. Today I don't find the liqueur-like sweetness this wine displayed from barrel, but this conveys an impression of brooding power and will require following.

Superrich and concentrated, with tiers of currant, blackberry and wild berry fruit that's plush, pushing ripeness to the edge. Yet maintains its balance, and for those who enjoy a rich, high-extract style, this works. To be released Spring 2007. 725 cases made.

DEEP DARK RUBY RED, HUGE NOSE OF BIG CHERRIES AND OTHER RED BERRIES, SOFT WELL INTEGRATED TANNINS AND A LONG WONDERFUL FINISH. A WONDERFUL WINE KUDOS TO BILL HARLAN AND HIS TEAM.

About This Producer

In his ongoing quest to produce world class wine in the tradition of 1st Growth Bordeaux, Bill Harlan - of Harlan Estate fame - started Bond to create single vineyard wines from sources meeting his high growing standards. Winemaker Robert Levy produces five vineyard designate wines: Melbury, St. Eden, Vecina, Pluribus and Quella, as well as a blend called The Matriarch. Levy's goal is for each wine to take on the unique expression of its vineyard site and Bill Harlan's ultimate plan is to produce wines from a total of 6 unique vineyards. The wines are known for their lush, deeply concentrated flavors, and their elegance and finesse, which Bill and Robert feel define them as the "Grand Crus" of Napa. Fewer than 1,500 cases of the Matriarch, and between 400 and 700 cases of the vineyard designates are produced annually.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
