Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 100

Another wine that doesn't put a hair wrong, the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve shows none of the negative stereotypes in the vintage and has incredible purity, notable freshness and a blockbuster, layered and balanced profile. Getting more than one expletive in the notes, it offers perfumed kirsch, blackberry, licorice, mint and hints of garrigue in its full-bodied, decadent and insanely textured personality. Still a baby, it will most likely be the longest-lived wine in the vintage. Don't let that stop you from opening bottles though, as it's a heavenly drink today as well.

About This Producer

Located in the northern part of Chateauneuf du Pape and owned by the Daumen family since 1905, the domaine began bottling a small percentage of wine under its own label in the 1960s. Current owner Jean Paul Daumen's father, Maxime, built new cellars and installed foudres to accommodate the expanding production. The domaine's vines cover approximately 30 hectares and average 60 years of age.
Yields are kept low and all grapes are de-stemmed prior to fermentation. 80% of the production is done in old oak foudres with the remainder in neutral barrels. Biodynamic principles are used in both the vineyards and cellar, and no SO2 is used during the vinification process.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
