International Wine Cellar | Rating: 90

($35) Deep red. Dark cherry and spiced plum on the nose, with exotic notes of anise and cinnamon. Like liquid fruitcake on the palate, with a brightening note of white pepper providing focus and tang. The nicely focused, spice-inflected finish emphasizes red berry flavors. This also will benefit from cellaring or aeration.

About This Producer

Recognized as one of the top producers in the Pacific Northwest, St. Innocent focuses primarily on vineyard-designated Pinot Noir, with Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Blanc rounding out the portfolio. The winery was founded in 1988 by winemaker and president Mark Vlossak with the intent of producing terroir-specific bottlings that "complement and extend the pleasure of a meal." 2007 marked the first vintage for St, Innocent in a new gravity-flow winery, and just a year prior the first vineyard land was purchased, a portion of the Zenith Vineyard in Eola-Amity Hills. Total production is 6,800 cases.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
