An inspiring red. Dark, intense and concentrated, yet polished and supple. Lots of red currant, black cherry and berry flavors are well-focused, picking up a tasty dash of toasty, mocha-laced oak. Firms up on the finish with solid, ripe tannins. Decant.

The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Grown (76% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec) exhibits a dense ruby/purple color, firm tannin, and an enticing nose of black currants, espresso roast, charcoal, and cedar wood.

Constantly developing nose. Initial aromas of blackberry/raspberry pie and sweet coffee giving way to a dark floral character, then herbs and spice, and finally a sharp burst of white flowers and citrus. Deep garnet ox blood. Up front berries revealing pink peppercorn, mild licorice and (after two hours decanted) pencil lead and chocolate. Seemed initially thin on palate, becoming fuller as time went by.

Nice Rutherford dust (even if from Oakville), cassis and black fruit, nice depth and big but softened tannins. Quite well made and still young, expected some development but showing very well.

About This Producer

Leslie Rudd, manager of Standard Beverage Corporation and Chairman of Dean & DeLuca, turned his attention to making his mark in the wine industry in 1996. He purchased a 55-acre estate in Oakville and put his substantial resources behind replanting the site, raising the bar of quality at every turn. Joining Rudd in this endeavor are Charles Thomas, former winemaker at Mondovi and Cardinale, and Terry Mathison, who has been hailed for his innovative viticultural practices. Fewer than 6000 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon, a Cabernet-based blend, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay are produced at this estate.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
