Dense raspberry, plum, licorice, tar and bacon notes are supported by thick, muscular tannins in this concentrated, showy red. A bit of a brute now (though floral and mineral hints chime in too) so cellar. If you do, you'll have a classic example of the vintage. 1,250 cases made.

Broad, expansive, rich, and impressively endowed, the dark ruby/purple-colored 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Prestige is dense, chewy, and meaty with high levels of alcohol, hints of roasted meats, kirsch liqueur, herbes de Provence, creme de cassis, and melted licorice. It is a broad, mouthfilling Chateauneuf du Pape that is classic and substantial. Drink it over the next 12-15 years.

Medium purple red with thin lightly colored legs. Very aromatic already but with even more latent power lurking. Attractive scents of lavender, stone, minerals, plum, cherry, and cedar. Tannins are significant and a bit rough but acids are integrated and more than sufficient. Despite the tannin, there is enough concentration present to handle the wine?s firm structure. The wine does turn chalky at the end and that is a bit of a negative. Regardless, I love the quality and depth of the wine?s fruit. Because of this quality the wine drinks way too easy right now.

A beautiful wine. It needed to open, and then built nicely. Very well-balanced, mouth coating, long finish. Earth, black cherry and other black fruit. It's got a few peak years left. A favorite.

Needs a bit more time to show its stuff. Was still a bit closed after sitting in the glass a while. Signs of of good spicy red fruit.

About This Producer

The Sabon family has a long history in Chateauneuf du Pape, and it is one of the oldest documented landholders in the region. Roger Sabon is the father of the three brothers who run the domain today - Jean-Jacques, Denis, and Gilbert. Since 2001, Didier Negron, son-in- law of Jean Jacques, has been the winemaker. Denis and his son Julien take care of the vineyards, and Delphine, daughter of Denis, runs the winery office. Today the domaine owns 15 ha. in Chateauneuf du Pape and 17 ha. in Roquemaure from which they produce Lirac and Cotes du Rhone.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
