The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon (97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Malbec and Petit Verdot) boasts an inky/purple color along with a rich bouquet of creosote, blueberries, blackberries, sweet earth, and smoky, spicy oak. With full body, abundant fruit, glycerin, and sweet tannin, a multilayered mouthfeel, and stunning upside potential, it is accessible enough to be drunk in 2-3 years, or cellared for two decades.

($110; blended with 2% malbec and 1% petit verdot) Deep ruby-red. Aromas of cassis, black cherry, sweet butter and loam. Sweet, lush and sappy, with black cherry and graphite flavors offering very good definition and lift. Offers compelling sweetness and an almost liqueur-like ripeness, but this is more than simply a fruit bomb. Finishes with substantial ripe, broad tannins. "The 2002 version is more muscular and long-aging but the 2003 is flashier," notes Herold.

Very complete and harmonious, with rich, extracted yet polished currant, wild berry and blackberry flavors that are supple and focused. Shows plenty of depth and concentration. The tannins need time to settle, but it's all there. 800 cases made.

Very ripe black/blue fruit, alcohol noticable but not too hot, plenty of oak spice without the vanilla...not my cup of tea but well made.

About This Producer

The name Merus derives from the Latin noun meaning pure, unmixed, complete, and undiluted, especially when pertaining to wine. Merus winery in Napa Valley strives to represent this idea of absolute purity in each and every one of their bottles.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
