Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

($200) Full ruby-red, clearly deeper than the regular Clos Vougeot bottling. Precise aromas of black cherry, minerals and underbrush, with an exotic suggestion of cherry liqueur. Creamy-sweet, silky and fat, with a high-pH mouth feel and distinctly candied fruit aspect. A distinctly lush wine with a '47-like texture. Finishes sweet and round, with utterly seamless tannins and strong lingering spice character.

About This Producer

Jean Raphet finally passed control of the domaine to his son Gerard in 2002, though his son had been tending the vineyards for over a decade. The wines from this property are remarkable and brilliant renditions of Pinot Noir. Equal parts caressing finesse, fruit purity and aromatic bliss, they have excellent track records at all levels. From the Bourgogne, to the mere cases production of the Grand Cru Clos de Beze, Raphet wines are consistently palate pleasing.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
