($55) Bright, deep ruby-red. High-toned aromas of violet pastille, chocolate, eucalyptus, pepper and mint. Sweet, fresh and peppery in the mouth, with bright acids framing the dark raspberry and bitter chocolate flavors. This offers very good verve. Finishes with dusty, building tannins that showed a bit of dryness with aeration.

About This Producer

The 25-acre biodynamically farmed DuMOL Estate Vineyard is located on an undulating east-facing slope of one of Russian River Valley's most famous ridgelines. From this classic site, and in tandem with some of the coastal area's finest growers, DuMOL crafts wines that fully capture the aromatics, flavors, and textures that exemplify their vineyard sites and the varietal characteristics in the purest and most precise form.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
