Gorgeous aromatics of rich pears and white peaches emanate from the glass of the 2003 Corton-Charlemagne (white). A wine of impressive breadth and harmony, its suave personality spreads out over the palate releasing waves of satin-textured white fruits, slate, and fresh herbs. Lush, supple, and inviting, this offering's long finish displays a slight brightness of acid (natural), rendering it surprisingly light on its feet. One of the top 2003 white Burgundies, it should be at its best between 2006 and 2014. Bravo!

Restrained for the vintage, this is elegant and grounded in lemon, mineral and hazelnut aromas and flavors accented by spicy oak. There's a little alcohol showing, but this is well-balanced and long.

The white flower and very ripe green apple aromas are nuanced by notes of straw and melon with rich, sweet and opulent medium full flavors that are thick, powerful and display ample pain grillé plus a touch of bitter lemon on the long finish. This is a dense, mouth coating wine with huge amounts of dry extract and while it will certainly age, there is so much baby fat present that it could be approached now. A very fine example for the vintage.

About This Producer


With vineyards donated by Emperor Charlemagne himself on the most desirable stretch of the Corton hill, Domain Bonneau Du Martray remains the largest single holding of the Charlemagne climate. It is the one and only domaine in Burgundy to produce exclusively Grand Cru wines and one of the finest white wine producers in the Cote D'Or. The estate's ownership has only changed hands three times since 775 with the current proprietor, Jean-Charles le Bault de la Monriere, taking over for his father in 1994.

The unique feature of the 9.5-hectare contiguous block of land is the orientation of the vines. Facing west and southwest at their altitude, the growing season is longer, which lends the wines greater complexity. As well as crafting perhaps Burgundy's most majestic Corton-Charlemagne, Bonneau Du Martray also produces a small amount of Grand Cru red Corton.

Wine Varietal: Chardonnay


Arguably the best dry white wine grape out there, Chardonnay is grown all over the globe. In addition to being the backbone of fine white Burgundies, Chardonnay is also one of the three major grape varieties used in producing Champagne. Susceptible to a myriad of complications, Chardonnay berries are relatively small, thin-skinned, fragile, and oxidize easily. Chardonnay grapes can be sensitive to winemaking techniques and more difficult to handle from harvest to bottling than many other varieties. Some producers will use malolactic fermentation (where harsher malic acid is turned into softer lactic acid and carbon dioxide) to reduce crispness and acidity and add a creamy, buttery texture to wines. The "oaky" character of some Chardonnays comes from fermenting or aging which takes place in oak barrels. Once barrel-aged, Chardonnay may take on notes of vanilla or toast. While Chardonnay is produced worldwide, the best can be found in France, the United States, Argentina, Chile, Australia, Italy, New Zealand, and South Africa. Typical descriptors for Chardonnay include mineral, green apple, citrus, tropical fruits, vanilla, butter and smokiness.
