Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 93

($265) Good saturated ruby. Superripe aromas of cassis, black raspberry, bitter chocolate and licorice; less herbal than this producer's other cabernets from this vintage. A fine-grained fruit bomb, with a captivating sweetness. This really expands on the back half yet dances on the palate. The lush tannins reach the incisors.

Deep color with heavily pigmented legs. The nose is a bit reticent but has fine underlying strength. Blackberry, stone, mint, vanilla, and oak scents. Creamy with smooth, enduring, and layered dark fruits. Texturally gorgeous ? pure silk which is a very rare characteristic for Cabernet. Incredibly well balanced. This wine has it all ? power and elegance. An easy wine to appreciate but very fine regardless. 100% Cabernet (clones 337 and 4) aged for 20 month in 100% new French oak barrels (Taransaud and Seguin Moreau) before being bottled without fining or filtration. Unfortunately, this wine is priced oh so dear ? not surprising given that Hobbs? prices all of his wine very aggressively.

About This Producer

When Paul Hobbs founded his eponymous winery in 1991, he set out to produce small lot, hand-crafted, vineyard designate wines. He began with just three - one Chardonnay, one Pinot Noir and one Cabernet Sauvignon.

Over the years, the small family of wines has grown to over a dozen as numerous new and historic vineyards have captured Hobbs' attention since that first vintage. The current wines are the result of years of perseverance, patience and experimentation in Hobbs' continuing adventure with wine. It is his great hope that the fruit-driven, complex wines he makes with his dedicated team will continue to appeal to many people around the globe.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
